In the early 1650s Oliver Cromwell was concerned about his son’s lifestyle, fearing that he was ‘idle’, given to leisure, good-living and over-spending; although this may well be as much a sign of Oliver’s over-zealousness as evidence of his son’s lifestyle, we know that Richard was soon in debt and he seems to have had money worries for much of his adult life.

Upon his army's victory, he oversaw the conversion of England into a republic, abolishing the monarchy and the House of Lords after the execution of King Charles I in January 1649.

After Cromwell’s death, in September 1658, the senior officers with whom Owen was identified were not impressed by Richard, Cromwell’s son and successor as Lord Protector.
The title of Lord Protector was also passed to his son, Richard Cromwell, in a manner not at all precisely like a royal succession. The problem was, this impromptu faux-monarchy didn’t have the deep foundations of history behind it, and Richard wasn’t quite the man his father was (Oliver’s nickname was Old Ironsides; Richard’s nickname was Tumbledown Dick, which about sums it up).
