Under the Subsidiary Alliance System used by Lord Wellesley, every ruler in India had to accept to pay a subsidy to the British for the maintenance of the British army.
Hyderabad became the first princely state to enter into subsidiary alliance with the British on September 01, 1798 and the Subsidiary Alliance was introduced by Lord Wellesley.
