The Rake's Progress: Stravinsky, Auden, and a Tale of Debauchery - The Rake’s Progress is one of the few modern operas that has a permanent place in the repertories of most contemporary opera companies. Premiering in 1951 in Vienna, it proved to be one of Igor Stravinsky’s greatest works, and his only full-length opera.
Stravinsky’s style may be period-inspired in The Rake’s Progress (‘I will lace each aria into a tight corset’) but it’s pure Stravinsky. He uses musical conventions only to subvert them: cadences land where we don’t expect, basslines refuse to resolve onto tonic notes, trills don’t resolve where they should.

La distribution comprenait Robert Rounseville (Tom Rakewell), Jennie Tourel (Baba la Turque) et Elisabeth Schwarzkopf qui, à la demande du compositeur lui-même, interpréta le rôle d’Anne Trulove.
