Il 20 dicembre 1927 Hess sposò la ventisettenne Ilse Pröhl (22 giugno 1900 – 7 settembre 1995) di Hannover. La coppia ebbe un figlio, Wolf Rüdiger Hess (18 novembre 1937 – 24 ottobre 2001).
