10 de mai. de 2021 · Marie Antoinette also became the patron of many artists, such as the female painter Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, who became the queen's official portrait painter. During her lifetime Le Brun painted 660 portraits and 200 landscapes, and her art can now be found in many museums all over the world, such as the Louvre, The National Gallery in London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

She was first imprisoned in the Temple with her family and, after Aug. 1, 1793, in the Conciergerie. After a number of unsuccessful attempts to obtain her escape failed, Marie Antoinette appeared before the Revolutionary Tribunal, charged with aiding the enemy and inciting civil war within France.
Before the guillotine stands Marie Antoinette with Sanson, the same executioner who had dispatched her husband ten months before. Surrounded by soldiers, and tens of thousands of onlookers, she awaits the moment of death. Also on the platform is Marie Antoinette’s confessor.

Should you go looking for the prison cell in which Marie-Antoinette spent her last few months, it no longer exists. Imprisoned in the former medieval fortress of the Conciergerie on the Quai d’Horloge in the centre of Paris before her ‘trial’ and death, the dank and dark cell in which she rested, alone, unable even to kiss her children goodbye, was later turned into a memorial.
