Alexander I. war der älteste Sohn des Kaisers Paul I. und seiner zweiten Gemahlin, Maria Fjodorowna, geborene Prinzessin Sophie Dorothee von Württemberg . Weich und sentimental, zeigte er sich wohlwollend und für Ideale begeistert, aber auch schwach und unbeständig und schon früh begann seine Bereitschaft, alles Unangenehme beiseitezuschieben.

In 1810, Emperor Alexander I approved Russia's first library law stipulating, among other things, that two legal copies of all printed matter in Russia be deposited in the library. [9] The library was to be opened for the public in 1812 but, as the more valuable collections had to be evacuated because of Napoleon's invasion , the inauguration was postponed for two years.
Catherine I died two years after Peter I, on 17 May 1727 at age 43, in Saint Petersburg, where she was buried at St. Peter and St. Paul Fortress. Tuberculosis, diagnosed as an abscess of the lungs, caused her early demise. Before her death she recognized Peter II, the grandson of Peter I and Eudoxia, as her successor.
Alexander I was the Emperor of Russia from 1801, the first King of Congress Poland from 1815, and the Grand Duke of Finland from 1809 to his death. He was the eldest son of Emperor Paul I and Sophie Dorothea of Württemberg. The son of Grand Duke Paul Petrovich, later Paul I, Alexander succeeded to the throne after his father was murdered.
