The May 1950 issue of Negro History Bulletin carried the sentiments of schoolchildren, parents, scholars, and donors who attested to Woodson’s successful promotion of “Negro History” in academia, in K-12 education, and in African American cultural life.

The railroad and coal mines in New River Gorge promised opportunity and a better life to many. Woodson's family purchased a farm and he grew up helping his father in the fields.

Today a National Historic Site, Dr. Woodson’s home served as the headquarters for the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
