Derry, the eldest of nine children (seven sons and two daughters) of Patrick Heaney, farmer and cattle-dealer, and his wife Margaret Kathleen (née McCann).

Seamus Heaney - Born in Ireland in 1939, Seamus Heaney was the author of numerous poetry collections, including Human Chain (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2010). He split his time between Dublin, Ireland, and Boston, where he taught at Harvard University for many years.
Seamus Justin Heaney ( County Derry ( Noord-Ierland ), 13 april 1939 – Dublin, 30 augustus 2013) was een Noord-Iers dichter, toneelschrijver, vertaler en in 1995 winnaar van de Nobelprijs voor Literatuur. Hij woonde in Dublin . In 1963 werd hij leraar Engels aan St. Joseph's College in Belfast.

Seamus Heaney was also an accomplished translator. His 1999 version of the Old English epic poem Beowulf became an international bestseller. Other works include translations from Middle Irish, such as Sweeney Astray and The Midnight Verdict (published by The Gallery Press, run by his friend Peter Fallon) and a limited edition of late translations of the work of Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli.
