Lawrence (Larry) Gilman ROBERTS nació el 21 de diciembre de 1937 en Westport (Connecticut). Sus padres Elliott y Elizabeth estaban doctorados en Química. Desde la infancia destacó por su carácter emprendedor. De niño construyó una red telefónica utilizando transistores, montó un televisor y creó una bobina de Tesla.
Lawrence Roberts a dans la foulée travaillé à la DARPA en collaboration avec Vinton Cerf et Robert Elliot Kahn à la création de l’ARPAnet, le premier réseau à transfert de paquets. Chargé du projet « Augmentation Research Center », mené par Douglas Engelbart , il contribue à la mise en place du deuxième nœud d'Arpanet.
