26 de set. de 2022 · Visiting the Tomb of Alice Chaucer, Ewelme. September 26, 2022. St Mary's Church in Ewelme is one of the most calm and tranquil places I've visited. You can see its tower rising up over Ewelme, as you approach. This ancient village was the Medieval home of Alice Chaucer and William de la Pole, Duke and Duchess of Suffolk.
Alice was the daughter of Thomas Chaucer and Matilda Burghersh. Throughout her life, she married three times, ascending to high status as a Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, an honor marking her close relationship with King Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou, facilitated by her marriage to William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk.

John de la Pole, 2nd Duke of Suffolk, KG (27 September 1442 – 14–21 May 1492), was a major magnate in 15th-century England. He was the son of William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk, and Alice Chaucer, the daughter of Thomas Chaucer (thus making John the great-grandson of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer). He left his young widow with an estate of extensive property, including Donnington Castle. Young Alice married next in 1421, Thomas Montacute, 4th Earl of Salisbury, and when he died in 1428 she had yet more property to her credit. Finally, in 1430, she married William de la Pole, Earl and later Duke of Suffolk. In 1442, she bore him a son, John.
