23 de nov. de 1987 · The plot here, prefigured in The Citadel of the Autarch (1982, the concluding New Sun volume), concerns Autarch Severian's quest to bring the life-giving New Sun to dying Urth. He embarks on a vast spaceship of the alien Hierodules (sort of cosmic avatars), which, with its solar sails, travels through space and time to planet Yesod, where the godlike, winged being Tzadkiel will render judgment.
I think I enjoyed this one just about as much as I enjoyed the whole of the Book of the New Sun. I've been blown away by the depth and wisdom these books have, and how there are so many mysteries that it will take dozens of re-reads to come close to comprehending.
1 de jan. de 2001 · On the final analysis, The Book of the New Sun is a dystopia… But it’s far from all, the book is also a picaresque novel… Severian – a gloomy and outlawed picaro – embarks on the quest of his life, to find his future and his destination in the dying bleak world.
In other words, maybe get through the whole cycle once, without reading Urth, and then either read Urth at the very end when you have put some distance between yourself and Book of the New Sun, or do another read of Book of the New Sun and then Urth, as a capper for reading the whole series.
