I read Ron Chernow's biography of Ulysses S. Grant before tackling Elizabeth Samet's work to annotate Grant's Personal Memoirs. Chernow's book helped me put the Personal Memoirs in the larger context of Grant's entire life while Samet's annotations helped me place the Personal Memoirs in the larger context of the world's military literature.
