  2. Lady Mary was born as the youngest child and the only daughter of William Hamilton, 11th Duke of Hamilton and of his wife, Princess Marie Amelie of Baden. Hereditary Princess of Monaco. Lady Mary's first marriage, on 21 September 1869 at Château de Marchais, was to Prince Albert, only child and heir apparent of Charles III, Prince of Monaco.

  3. The home of the present 15th Duke of Hamilton and 12th Duke of Brandon, Angus Alan Douglas Douglas-Hamilton (b. 1938), is the estate of Lennoxlove, near Haddington in East Lothian. Lennoxlove (formerly the estate of Lethington and home of William Maitland, Secretary of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots) was purchased by the Hamiltons in 1947.

  4. Hamilton was born at Hamilton Palace in December 1616, the younger son of James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton and Lady Ann Cunningham. Hamilton was educated at the University of Glasgow , and from there travelled to Continental Europe , where he spent time at the court of Louis XIII of France , on his return aged 21 he established himself as a favourite at the court of Charles I in London.
