Punahou’s rich history dates back to 1795, when the lands of Kapunahou were passed on by Kamehameha and eventually given to Hiram Bingham, one of the School's missionary founders. The School opened on July 11, 1842, and over its nearly 180 years, has educated generations of students and had a place in Hawai‘i’s history.

In 2023, Punahou revealed its renewed Mission and Values statements, after a yearlong process of listening to our students, faculty, staff, families, and alumni. The statements reflect the many voices of our community, who shared with us their perspectives about Punahou and its future.

We are shaped by our Hawaiian and Christian heritage and the shared values that emerged as people from around the world came together in this place to learn and grow over the past 182 years.
There will be two lines for purchasing at the Haku Lei Booth: One line will be for walk ups to purchase kupe‘e, all hair pieces, and lei po‘o (when no ticket holder is present). Prior to Carnival opening, at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3, up to 200 numbered tickets will be distributed to those wanting to purchase lei po‘o.
Punahou was founded in 1841 on lands given to Christian missionaries by Hawaiian ali’i (chiefs).
