He was later identified with a real king of Ethiopia; another theory identifies him with a Chinese prince who defeated the sultan of Persia in 1141.

The letter was written by a king named Presbyter Johannes, better known as Prester John. The letter said Prester John ruled over a vast eastern Christian kingdom. He describes his land as "three Indias," in which no crime existed, and peace ruled supreme.

It’s important to note that in the previous year, the County of Edessa, the northernmost Crusader state, was captured by Zengi, the Seljuk governor of Mosul.
