The earliest religious community, presumably British, dates from the 5th or 6th century, and was succeeded by what appears to have been a small mid to late Anglo-Saxon monastery. (fn. 351) By the 12th century it was the site of the chapel of St. Michael, probably destroyed by earthquake in 1275.
