Charles of Orléans (24 November 1394 – 5 January 1465) was Duke of Orléans from 1407, following the murder of his father, Louis I, Duke of Orléans. He was also Duke of Valois , Count of Beaumont-sur-Oise and of Blois , Lord of Coucy , and the inheritor of Asti in Italy via his mother Valentina Visconti .
In 1830, following the French July Revolution, the House of Orléans became the ruling house when the monarch of the elder restored Bourbon line, Charles X, was replaced by the 6th duke, Louis Philippe III d'Orléans, son of Philippe Egalité.

Considered one of the finest French poets writing in the courtly tradition, Charles d’Orleans was born into an aristocratic family: His father was Louis d’Orleans, his grandfather was Charles V of France, and his uncle was Charles VI. He spent his childhood in the Loire Valley, in a household attuned to the literature of the day.
