Fernando López-Menchero has just published the 3 rd version of his Proto-Indo-European self-study book, A Practical Guidebook for Modern Indo-European Explorers, updating the previously published 1 st version (2018).
This book introduces Proto-Indo-European and explores what the language reveals about the people who spoke it. The Proto-Indo-Europeans lived somewhere in Europe or Asia between 5,500 and 8,000 years ago, and no text of their language survives.
The Indo-European language family was discovered by Sir William Jones, who noted resemblances among Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, Germanic, and Celtic languages. He hypothesized an ancestral language that long ago gave rise to languages in these groups. This hypothetical, but strongly evidenced language, is called Proto-Indo-European.
Scholars term this common parent Proto-Indo-European (PIE). No documents of this language exist; it is confined to prehistory. But linguists use the comparative method, a tool of historical linguistics, to reconstruct elements of this language's vocabulary and grammar. The IELEX collects the individual items of this reconstructed vocabulary.
