History. The academy was established on 1 April 1950 under the auspices of the University of Pretoria and the South African Military College [1] (now the South African Army College) in Voortrekkerhoogte (now Thaba Tswane ), with the goal of elevating students to a BA (Mil) or BSc (Mil) degree to meet the intellectual challenges of modern war.
Previously known as the Whampoa Military Academy, the military academy produced commanders who fought in many of China's conflicts in the 20th century, notably the Northern Expedition, the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War .
