Stanley Rous was born in 1895 in Mutford, Suffolk, England. He began his football career as a player for the amateur team, the Lowestoft Town Football Club. In 1924, he became a referee and quickly climbed the ranks, becoming a FIFA-listed referee in 1934. He refereed in the 1934 and 1938 World Cups and officiated the final of the 1936 Olympics.
