Außerdem diente das Buch als Vorlage zur US-amerikanischen Serie About a Boy, die von Februar 2014 bis 2015 in zwei Staffeln ausgestrahlt wurde. Der Titel des Buches (angelehnt an den Nirvana -Song About a Girl ) scheint vordergründig dem Jungen Marcus gewidmet, ist jedoch nicht minder zutreffend für den großen Jungen Will, der eine noch wesentlichere Wandlung durchläuft.
Fridtjof Küchemann bezeichnete About a Boy in der FAZ als „charmante Komödie“. Er hob die Leistung Hugh Grants hervor, der „in der Rolle Will Freemans die Balance zwischen Ignoranz und Unsicherheit, Coolness und Offenheit, die sich über den Film immer mehr, aber in aller Ruhe verschiebt und aus dem selbstsüchtigen Slacker schließlich einen echten Freund macht“.
Set in 1993 London, About a Boy features two main protagonists: Will Freeman, a 36-year-old bachelor, and Marcus Brewer, a 12-year-old incongruous schoolboy described as "introverted" by his suicidal mother, Fiona, despite his tendencies to bond and interact with people.
