Biografia. Nata a Newark, nel New Jersey, da Eva Marie Rice e John Merle Saint, studiò recitazione alla Bowling Green State University.Dopo aver terminato gli studi, lavorò per qualche tempo in radio e alla televisione, prima di recitare in Fronte del porto (1954) di Elia Kazan, con Marlon Brando, per cui vinse nel 1955 l'Oscar come migliore attrice non protagonista.
