Guinness, Rupert Edward Cecil Lee (1874–1967), 2nd earl of Iveagh , agriculturalist, businessman, and philanthropist, was born 29 March 1874 in London, eldest among three sons of Edward Cecil Guinness (qv), of the wealthy brewing family, who was created 1st earl of Iveagh in 1919, and his wife Adelaide Maria (d. 1916), daughter of Richard Samuel Guinness, MP, of Deepwell, Co. Dublin.

  2. By 1925, however, Kenwood’s future was secured when Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh (1847–1927), bought the house and 74 acres immediately surrounding it. The Kenwood Preservation Council purchased land including the ponds and ‘Ken Wood’, and vested it in London County Council.

  4. Farmleigh was bought in 1873 by Edward Cecil Guinness (1st Earl of Iveagh), the great-grandson of Arthur Guinness, founder of the Guinness brewery. Edward’s main residence at the time was 80 St. Stephen’s Green (now Iveagh House, the headquarters of the Department of Foreign Affairs) and he viewed Farmleigh as ‘a rustic retreat’.

  5. The paintings displayed on the ground floor at Kenwood were collected in the late 19th century by the Irish brewing magnate and philanthropist Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh. Lord Iveagh’s internationally important collection of Old Master and British paintings includes masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Gainsborough, Reynolds and Turner.
