He had joined Wyatt’s Rebellion, which had protested against Mary I’s marrying Phillip of Spain, and when he realized that he had been discovered, he tried to flee the country in disguise.

Henry Grey var son till Thomas Grey, 2:e markis av Dorset och Margaret Wotton, och blev tredje markis av Dorset 1530 då fadern avled. År 1533, med kung Henrik VIII:s tillåtelse, gifte han sig med Frances Brandon (1517–1559), dotter till Henrik VIII:s syster Maria Tudor och Charles Brandon, hertig av Suffolk.

Grey had longed to be a garter knight for years, but even though his father-in-law, Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, nominated him annually, he was not elected. Things changed in Grey's favour when Edward VI became king.
