Hugh John MacDonald (April 11, 1911 – June 24, 1998) was a provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1948 to 1959. Political career. MacDonald ran for a seat to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for the first time in the 1948 Alberta general election.

Son of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir Hugh John was also a premier of Manitoba for brief time in 1899-1900. He resigned to run federally, but lost to Clifford Sifton. Biography. Hugh Macdonald is Notable. Hugh John Macdonald was born in Kingston, Upper Canada, on March 13, 1850. On 13 October 1868, he enrolled in the Queen's Own Rifles as a Riflemen. He rose to the rank of Corporal then Sergeant before being commissioned as an Ensign on 22 April 1870. He retired from the Queen's Own Rifles on 26 April 1882.

Macdonald never appeared to get over the death of John and until the day he died, he kept a box of the child’s toys with him. The birth was difficult for Isabella as she was 39 at the time and needed several months of rest following the birth.
