  6. Biography. Hugh Macdonald is Notable. Hugh John Macdonald was born in Kingston, Upper Canada, on March 13, 1850. On 13 October 1868, he enrolled in the Queen's Own Rifles as a Riflemen. He rose to the rank of Corporal then Sergeant before being commissioned as an Ensign on 22 April 1870. He retired from the Queen's Own Rifles on 26 April 1882.
