Isabel Neville, Duchess of Clarence, is the eldest daughter of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, sister of Anne Neville, the wife of George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence and mother of Margaret Pole. Lady Isabel Neville (5 September 1451 – 22 December 1476) was the elder daughter and co-heiress of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick (the Kingmaker of the Wars of the Roses), and Anne de Beauchamp, suo jure 16th Countess of Warwick.
Isabel died after giving birth to her fourth child. Her husband George accused one of Isabel’s ladies in waiting of poisoning her and, acting as though he were king, had her tried in a local court under his control which, not surprisingly, found her guilty and she was executed. The conviction was posthumously overturned by Edward IV.
Isabel Neville died on 22 December 1476, two and a half months after the birth of Richard. It is now thought the cause was either consumption or childbed fever (puerperal fever), yet at the time her husband accused one of her ladies-in-waiting of having murdered her, and committed in his turn a notorious judicial murder of the lady, called Ankarette Twynyho.
Isabel (sometimes called Isabella) was born and spent most of her youth at Warwick Castle. In 1469 though, her power-hungry father, Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick, defected from King Edward IV after his marriage to Elizabeth Woodville and, instead of ruling England through Edward, planned a marriage for Isabel to Edward’s brother George Duke of Clarence.
