In 1959, he was appointed Reader in Classical Archaeology at the University of Oxford, subsequently becoming a fellow of Merton College in 1963.

The farmhouse was built in the 17th century, probably on the site of an earlier house. It was extended at the rear in the 18th, but was still described in 1797 as a 'small farmhouse'.
