Goya pintó este retrato en Madrid, durante la breve estancia del Duque en la ciudad.

Historia. El dibujo pasó por herencia en 1828 a Javier Goya, hijo del pintor, y en 1854 a Mariano Goya y Goicoechea, nieto del artista. Posteriormente, lo poseyeron Valentín Carderera (ca. 1861) y Mariano Carderera (ca. 1880). A finales del siglo XIX fue adquirido por la Kunsthalle de Hamburgo. Análisis artístico.
