Contemporary linguists and educators commonly use the term L1 to refer to a first or native language, and the term L2 to refer to a second language or a foreign language that's being studied.

A second language (L2) is a language spoken in addition to one's first language (L1). A second language may be a neighbouring language, another language of the speaker's home country, or a foreign language.

SLA is relevant to many areas of our everyday lives, including, but not limited to education, public policy, national security and diplomacy, the economy, and cross-cultural understanding.
Second language learning (SLL) is concerned with the process and study of how people acquire a second language, which is often referred to as L2 or target language, as opposed to L1 (the native language).

23 de mai. de 2024 · A second language is a language that is learned in addition to a person's mother tongue, or first language. English is the second language learned by most people worldwide. These languages may be acquired by absorption, because it is spoken in the home, or actively pursued by taking courses.
The term ‘second language acquisition’ is used to refer to the learning of any nonnative language, regardless of the sociocultural nature of the learning environment (second vs foreign) and the order in which the language is learned (second vs third, or fourth).
