Art. Much of Byrne's art was portraits, in a wide variety of styles ranging from fairly conventional oils to what are effectively caricatures. The full stylistic range was applied to his many self-portraits; the 2022 retrospective included 42 of these, and many are among his best known works.
3 de dez. de 2023 · John Byrne (1940–2023) National Galleries of Scotland. Painter, designer and writer, born in Glasgow. He attended the School of Art there, 1958–61; Edinburgh College of Art, 1961–2; Glasgow School of Art, 1962–3; then a travelling scholarship took him to Italy in 1963–4.
3 de mar. de 2022 · John Byrne (1940–2023) Paisley Museum and Art Galleries, Renfrewshire Council Collections. It led to his first solo show at the Portal Gallery in Mayfair in 1967 and, after revealing his true identity, he became a full-time artist. The Portal Gallery didn't seem to mind, and continued to exhibit his work.
His work is held in major collections in Scotland and abroad. Several of his paintings hang in The Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, the Museum of Modern Art and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. View John Byrne prints here.
