Eton College was founded in 1440 by Henry VI as “Kynge’s College of Our Ladye of Eton besyde Windesore”. Henry wanted his subjects to have the opportunities of gaining knowledge that he had enjoyed, and he made provision for 70 poor boys, known as King’s Scholars, to be housed and educated at Eton free of charge.

King Henry VI founded Eton College in 1441, in order to prepare boys from poorer backgrounds to go to the University of Cambridge. Back then it was named “Kynge’s College of Our Ladye of Eton besyde Windesore.”

Henry VI, the physically weak and sick son of the hero of Agincourt Henry V, founded the college in October, 1440. The school has just passed its 570 th anniversary.
Eton College was to be the pinnacle of learning, and to enable this, Henry VI ordered that no other grammar school was to be founded in Windsor or within a ten-mile radius.
It was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI as Kynge's College of Our Ladye of Eton besyde Windesore (The King's College of Our Lady of Eton beside Windsor), as a sister institution to King's College, Cambridge, making it the 18th-oldest Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference school.
