Spain in the Middle Ages is a period in the history of Spain that began in the 5th century following the fall of the Western Roman Empire and ended with the beginning of the early modern period in 1492. The history of Spain is marked by waves of conquerors who brought their distinct cultures to the peninsula.
Medieval Spain was considered a battle for Christians who attempted to regain control from the Moors ever since they conquered Spain in 711 AD. The Moorish influence was prevalent during the early years of medieval Spain and it was marked by fighting among different Muslim Kingdoms.

The survivors joined the Asding Vandals who crossed from Spain to North Africa in 429. The number of emigrants traditionally has been put at 80,000.
Only the florescence of archaeological research beginning in the late twentieth century has made it possible to transcend this linguistic divide and see the continuities in the Early Middle Ages of Spain and Portugal. In a.d. 400, Spain and Portugal had been part of the Roman Empire for hundreds of years.
