Richard Colley Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley, KG, KP, PC, PC (Ire) (20 June 1760 – 26 September 1842) was an Anglo-Irish politician and colonial administrator. He was styled as Viscount Wellesley until 1781, when he succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Mornington .

Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley, elder son of Garret Wesley, 1st Earl of Mornington, and brother of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, was created Marquess Wellesley in the Irish peerage (1799). He served as Governor-General of Bengal 1797 – 1805 and Foreign Secretary 1809 – 12.

Educated at Eton and Christ Church, he was a Pittite MP from 1784, then Governor General of India, 1798-1805, after which he was Foreign Secretary, 1809-12, before resigning and then attempting to form a government after Perceval’s death.
The British colonial administrator Richard Colley Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley (1760-1842), served as governor general of India. He was one of the most vigorous expansionists to hold that office.
