By the time he landed at Dublin in January 1642 as a colonel in the forces raised to quell the Irish rebellion, he was already an experienced soldier, having participated in expeditions to Cadiz (1625) and the Isle of Ré (1627), and having served in the Low Countries (1631–8) and in the bishops’ wars (1639–40).
