This formed part of the Manor of Twickenham, which comprised 43 acres and 77 acres of common land in Twickenham, Whitton and Isleworth.

  6. York House (listed grade II*) stands in the north-west half of the site. It is a large, three-storey H-plan house which dates originally from the mid C17 but was remodelled in the early C18, with later alterations and extensions from the mid C19 (east wing) until the mid C20 (office wing to the west).

  7. York House has been a town hall since 1926—first for Twickenham and then after 1965 for the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames. The latter is an amalgamation of three former boroughs, Barnes, Richmond, and Twickenham. Their plate and regalia are on display in the entrance hall, including three silver gilt maces.
