Philip was the son of the future Holy Roman emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg and Mary of Burgundy.

Philip I (c. 1052 – 29 July 1108), called the Amorous (French: L’Amoureux), was King of the Franks from 1060 to 1108. His reign, like that of most of the early Capetians , was extraordinarily long for the time.
On Ferdinand II's death in 1516, Charles I was proclaimed as king of Castile and of Aragon (in authority) jointly with his mother Joanna I as the Queen of Castile (in name). As the first monarch to reign over Castile and Aragon, Charles I may be considered as the first operational King of Spain.
