    Construction of Huis ten Bosch Palace started in 1645. Its initial functionwas as a summer residence for stadholder Prince Frederik Hendrik and his wife,Princess Amalia.

    During this period the palace had four different owners. The last of these,Prince William IV, had the palace thoroughly restored.

    Under French rule, the palace became state property. King Louis Bonapartealso altered the interior of the palace, thereby bringing the Empire style tothe Netherlands.

    After Willem I was proclaimed King of the Netherlands in 1815, members of theroyal family often lived in Huis ten Bosch, among them King Willem I himself andhis wife, Queen Wilhelmina.     Between 1950 and 1981 there were two rounds of restorations. On 10 August 1981 Queen Beatrix, Prince Claus and their children took up residence in Huis ten Bosch. In early 2014, Princess Beatrix moved to Drakensteyn Castle. Since January 2019 King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and their three daughters have lived at Huis ten Bosch Palace.
