Following the 1999 season, the American and National Leagues were merged with Major League Baseball, and the leagues ceased to exist as business entities. The role of the league president was eliminated. In 2001, Bill Giles, son of Warren Giles, was named honorary president of the NL.

Bill Giles was born in 1934 in Rochester, NY. At the time, his father Warren Giles was a minor league baseball executive. Warren Giles went on to become general manager and later president of the Cincinnati Reds. From 1951 to 1969, Warren Giles served as president of the National League. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979.

He was pushed out by ownership partners in 1997 and in 1998 began selling off pieces of the team, “mainly because my salary went away,” he said.
