Manor house, during the European Middle Ages, the dwelling of the lord of the manor or his residential bailiff and administrative centre of the feudal estate. The medieval manor was generally fortified in proportion to the degree of peaceful settlement of the country or region in which it was.

During the 16th century many lords of manors moved their residences from their ancient manor houses often situated next to the parish church and near or in the village and built a new manor house within the walls of their ancient deer-parks adjoining. It was love at first sight for interior designer Sarah Southwell and her husband, when they first laid eyes on this Grade II listed 16th century manor house in Somerset. “We both fell in love with the house instantly,” Sarah tells us.
Avebury Manor & Garden is a National Trust property consisting of a Grade I listed early-16th-century manor house and its surrounding garden. It is in Avebury , near Marlborough , Wiltshire, England, in the centre of the village next to St James's Church and close to the Avebury neolithic henge monument.

It was particularly popular in galleries, long elevated corridors in which it was possible to walk for exercise and enjoy the view.
