Tullimonstrum, colloquially known as the Tully monster or sometimes Tully's monster, is an extinct genus of soft-bodied bilaterian animal that lived in shallow tropical coastal waters of muddy estuaries during the Pennsylvanian geological period, about 300 million years ago.
The Tully Monster was a mysterious fossil that baffled scientists for decades. Now, a new study reveals that it was a vertebrate, related to modern lampreys, with a bizarre proboscis and eyes on stalks.

A Yale-led team of paleontologists has identified the 300-million-year-old Tully Monster as a vertebrate, part of the same lineage as the modern lamprey. The study used the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory to reveal the animal's features and its position on the Tree of Life.
