The Tudor rose (sometimes called the Union rose) is the traditional floral heraldic emblem of England and takes its name and origins from the House of Tudor, which united the House of Lancaster and the House of York.
It also allowed Henry to invent and exploit his most famous heraldic device, the Tudor Rose, combining the so-called Lancastrian red rose and the White Rose of York. This floral union neatly symbolised the restoration of peace and harmony and his marriage in January 1486 to Elizabeth of York.

Richard's son predeceased him and Richard was killed in 1485 after an invasion by the forces of Henry Tudor, who claimed the throne through his mother Margaret Beaufort. Tudor assumed the throne as Henry VII, founding the Tudor dynasty and bringing the Plantagenet line of kings to an end.
The Tudor rose represented the very heart of the Tudor dynasty and it became a way of looking forward to future generations and a peaceful kingdom. Henry VII also used Tudor roses, along with the Beaufort portcullis, to decorate the new chapel he commissioned at Westminster Abbey.
The rose has been England’s national flower since the War of the Roses (1455-1485). It is the white rose of the House of York which lies at the centre of the Tudor Rose, with the red rose of the House of Lancaster surrounding it.
