Enquanto o jovem de 19 anos, com um extintor de 18 quilos nas mãos, corria para salvar o piloto em chamas, os carros de Hans-Joachim Stuck e Pryce vinham em sua direção. Tom, entretanto, estava atrás de Stuck e em alta velocidade para tentar uma ultrapassagem, visando recompensar as posições perdidas.
Pryce não resiste e morre instantaneamente. O fiscal, Jansen Van Vuuren , então com apenas dezenove anos, também morreu. Ele só foi identificado por exclusão, pois seu corpo ficou irreconhecível.
