20 de ago. de 2006 · Chapter III. Tom’s meeting with the Prince. Tom got up hungry, and sauntered hungry away, but with his thoughts busy with the shadowy splendours of his night’s dreams. He wandered here and there in the city, hardly noticing where he was going, or what was happening around him.
These stories inspire Tom, who dearly wishes to meet a prince one day, to start imitating the speech and mannerisms of royalty. One day when Tom goes out to beg, he absentmindedly wanders far away from home.
The novel represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. The plot concerns the ascension of nine-year-old Edward VI of England in 1547 and his interactions with look-alike Tom Canty, a London pauper who lives with his abusive, alcoholic father.
