These aspects of his style are admirably expressed in the present Saint Agnes, which dates from just before his return to France, where he was to lead an artistic revival that culminated in the foundation of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1648, the year before he died.
Saint Agnes was an early fourth-century virgin martyr, whose name signifies her chastity. She is shown here holding her traditional attribute of a lamb ( agnus in Latin) together with a palm signifying her martyrdom at the hands of the Romans during the persecutions of the Christians by Diocletian in the year 304.

Simon Vouet (Paris, 9 de janeiro de 1590 — idem, 30 de junho de 1649) foi um pintor barroco francês. Seu pai, Laurent, era também pintor e o ensinou nos rudimentos da arte - o irmão de Simon, Aubin Vouet (1595-1641) também foi pintor, enquanto que sua esposa Virginia da Vezzo foi modelo para as Virgens e Madonnas de Simon.
