His granddaughter was a passionate fan of the Harry Potter series and convinced Richard Harris to take the offer. It wasn’t without a little compromise first: she wouldn’t speak to him if he didn’t.
Why didn’t Gambon Read the Books?
Gambon didn’t read a single word of the Harry Potter series to prepare for his role as Dumbledore. He did this because he didn’t want to take away from his performance. Gambon believed that knowing the character from the book would restrict the creativity of his performance and decided it was best to make Dumbledore his own. It was a risk but one he was willing to take.
