Rene Gallimard is a former French diplomat who falls in love with Song Liling, a Chinese opera singer who is actually a man. He is a victim of his own orientalist and imperialist prejudices, and his affair ends in betrayal and humiliation.
Overview... an awkward, opera-loving French diplomat. He has recently come to China, and he is just as bewildered by the culture as he is enamored with it. Or, to be more exact, enamored with one specific part of it: Song Liling, the beautiful Chinese actress who gives Gallimard a much-needed boost to his confidence.
Butterfly tells the love story between René Gallimard, a sexually insecure minor French diplomat, and Song Liling, a diva from the Chinese opera, a man who pretends to be a woman. Elements of Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly echo throughout the play.
