The Miles Davis Quintet was an American jazz band from 1955 to early 1969 led by Miles Davis. The quintet underwent frequent personnel changes toward its metamorphosis into a different ensemble in 1969.

Miles was their debut, a collection of standards—pop and bebop—that corralled the energy, moods and tempos of the tracks suggest the forethought that went into Miles’ nightly gigs, like “The Theme,” which served for years as the group’s set-closer.
The resulting 32 tracks would make up five complete and significant albums: the quintet’s 1956 debut release, Miles: The New Miles Davis Quintet, Cookin’ (1957), Relaxin’ (1958), Workin’ (1959), and Steamin’ (1961).
