In July 1998, McKennitt's fiancé Ronald Rees, his brother Richard, and their close friend Gregory Cook drowned in a boating accident on Georgian Bay. She was deeply affected by the event, and she founded the Cook-Rees Memorial Fund for Water Search and Safety in the same year.
In 1998, I started the Cook-Rees Memorial Fund for Water Search and Safety, when three people very dear to me – Ronald Rees, Richard Rees and Gregory Cook – perished in a boating incident not far from where I live.

Following this tragedy, Ronald Rees's partner, Canadian singer/composer Loreena McKennitt, founded The Cook-Rees Memorial Fund For Water Search And Safety with the support and participation of the Cook and Rees families and their friends.
