This painting tells of Jacob the Patriarch´s mysterious dream, as told in Genesis. He appears asleep, lying on his left shoulder with a tree behind him. On the other side is the ladder of light, by which the angels ascend and descend.

Jacob's Dream highlights the influence of both Caravaggio and the Venetian school in Ribera's work but this piece has less dramatic effect than his earlier paintings. Ribera creates a composition that mixes both naturalism and vague elements to emphasize the subject.
His painting evolved towards a more naturalistic and luminous style, as we can see in this picture, Jacob’s Dream, which is Ribera’s masterpiece. The painter has given us the most beautiful and perfect depiction of the dream.
