Alfred Stieglitz (January 1, 1864 – July 13, 1946) was an American photographer and modern art promoter who was instrumental over his 50-year career in making photography an accepted art form.
He included all of his most famous photographs, but he also purposely chose to include recent photos of O'Keeffe, who, because of her years in the Southwest sun, looked older than her forty-five years, in comparison to Stieglitz's portraits of his young lover Norman.
A trailblazing photographer, Alfred Stieglitz vigorously championed photography as a fine art and established its value as modern art in America through his own work, the journals he published, and the shows he held at his influential New York galleries.
